Turf Toe

A sprain of the big toe joint common in athletes.

Turf toe is a sprain of the main joint of the big toe caused by bending the toe upward beyond its normal range. It got its name from artificial turf injuries but occurs on any surface. It can range from a mild sprain to a complete ligament tear.

Signs and Symptoms

Recognizing Turf Toe

  • Pain and tenderness at the base of the big toe
  • Swelling around the big toe joint
  • Limited range of motion
  • Pain that worsens with push-off
  • Bruising around the joint

Surgical Consideration (Last Resort)

Surgery is always the last resort.
Severe grade III turf toe with ligament rupture or sesamoid fracture may require surgical repair, especially in competitive athletes.
