Signs and Symptoms

Recognizing Sinus Tarsi Syndrome

  • Persistent lateral ankle pain
  • Pain directly over the sinus tarsi (outer ankle)
  • Worsening pain on uneven surfaces
  • Feeling of instability
  • Pain that improves briefly with rest but returns with activity
Treatment Approach

Dr. Husein's philosophy

80% of cases resolve with conservative care

Conservative Care First (Preferred)

  • Corticosteroid injection into the sinus tarsi
  • Physical therapy and proprioception training
  • Ankle bracing
  • Custom orthotics
  • Anti-inflammatory medications
  • Activity modification

Surgical Consideration (Last Resort)

Surgery is always the last resort.
Arthroscopic debridement of the sinus tarsi may be performed if conservative treatment fails after several months.
